You're Never Too Old For Mom

Monday, April 27, 2009

I just have to give a quick shout-out to my Mom for all her help with Landon. For 10 days she cooked, cleaned, grocery shopped, made me snacks, watered plants, did laundry, cuddled (Landon and I), burped, consoled, diapered, comforted, shared wisdom, prayed, and entertained. Thanks Mom for all the help! I wouldn't have made it physically or emotionally without your support during those first few crazy days of transition into motherhood. I'll never forget how talked me up during my day five melt-down. A girl is never too old to need her Mama.

And thanks to my in-laws Richard and Kristie for a great visit! More great food, cuddles for Landon, help around the house, great wine, ass-kickin' vinegar, and moral support.

And finally, thanks Dad for 2 hours of solid rocking in the middle of the night. That first night home was rough (for some of us :) ); I know your grandson loved the bonding!

More pics for the grandparents....

The Birth Story Continued

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

So it's now Tuesday morning and Shelley and my mom are helping me labor. The contractions are coming between 4-7 minutes apart and lasting about 30-50 seconds. The pain in my back was excruciating and the only thing that helped was deep pressure on my lower back. I would throw my forehead against the wall at each contraction, moan low and deep, and then either Shelley or Mom would press and massage my lower back muscles. The deeper the pressure the better (I ended up with some nice back bruising!).

Around 8:30am I finally woke RJ up. He was still feeling really sick and it took him awhile to rouse himself out of bed and into the coaching mode. Shelley remembered the birthing ball and she starting blowing it up for me, with little 5 week old Miles on her hip. The birthing ball felt great! I sat on it in the living room rocking between contractions and then leaning into the side of the couch with each one. However, they seemed to slow the labor down as my contractions starting being a bit further apart. Therefore, I started alternating between the ball and pacing the living room to keep things moving. I also tried a few different positions to see if I could get Landon to shift and take the pressure off of my back. At one point I was on the floor with my bum in the air. We had the front door open b/c it was warm in the house and my neighbor breezed in. A 2x mom herself she joined us for a few minutes massaging my back. I stopped having a labor coach and found myself with a labor team!

Now here's the best part....it is now about 10am. The labor has continued the same for while. Suddenly 3 people arrive at the door. They are from the Agricultural Department and they were investigating an illegal shipment of bonsai trees that were sent to our address from Japan! These three then proceed to question my husband on the porch for nearly an hour - listening to me labor a few feet away in the living room!

I finally had to walk outside between contractions, look at the head investigator, and explain that things were bad and I was ready to go to the hospital!

Praise God we only live 1 miles from the hospital b/c sitting in the car was awful. We got set up in room number 4 (the entire team - mom, Shelley, Miles, RJ and my sister who bounced in and out with my dad) and the nurse checked me. I was only 3 1/2 cm dilated, 100& effaced, and -1 station. We continued this way for the next 3-4 hours (time started blurring). The contractions were getting closer and closer together. They were about 3 minutes apart and lasting about 1-1.5 minutes when I got into the shower with the birthing ball. I lasted in there only 10 minutes before I starting moaning for drugs. It was disappointing for me to need the drugs and so RJ and I agreed that she would check me and if I was over 5 cm I would try to keep going. I was only 4. Bring on the Demerol.

Demoral felt like a tropical cocktail in the middle of the Sahara desert. Sweet, sweet relief. Unfortunately by the time it was wearing off (1 hour) I was still only 4cm and they were taking about Pitocin since my water had broken awhile back. I knew I couldn't do Pitocin and back labor, plus, at this point it had been about 14 hours and I knew I wasn't going to have the strength for transition, let alone pushing. Bring on the EPI!

Dear, wonderful epidural.

Wow. I admit that the recovery from the epidural was a bit longer then if I had gone completely natural but my goodness I'm not sure why I was so against it. It was amazing!

I had what they called a "window" meaning I didn't get 100% relief, I had a few nerve endings that wouldn't go numb so I could still feel the contractions. But it was nothing like before, I was able to rest and relax for the next 8-9 hours. We only had one upset. They put me on pitocin quickly after giving me the epidural and Landon's heart rate dropped signifigantly 10 minutes later. 3 nurses and 2 doctors came racing in the room. They threw an oxygen mask on me and starting checking Landon immediately. Thankfully, besides scaring RJ and I half to death everything was fine. They just took me off the Pitocin so progression took awhile.

Finally, on April 14th at 11:45pm I told the nurse I was ready to push. I was 10 cm and I felt the urge. Shelley had to go home to her family earlier so it was RJ, my mom and dad and sister, April, in the room. My mom and sister alternated holding my left leg, RJ held the right and my dad sat up next to my head. It took me half and hour to get Landon to crowning and then half an hour more to get him completely out. I enjoyed pushing. It was hard work but I was so excited to meet my boy.

Dr. Green helped ease him out at 12:55am April 15th. He was placed on my chest immediately and RJ cut the cord. My emotions where all over the place. Honestly there were so many feelings I was overwhelmed. Excitement and endorphins after the long labor, exhaustion, sweet relief, amazement, awe, nervousness, wonderment....

...and Love.

Landon's arrival takes place over 3 days and 24+ hours....

Monday, April 13th -

The midwife checked and I was only 1cm dilated and not yet thinned. She assured us that there was a good chance our son would arrive on his own later in the week but we still went ahead and scheduled an induction date of April 19th.

After my morning appointment I met up with Kelly for some shopping at the Camarillo outlets and errands to Babies R Us and Costco. I was on my feet all day and felt great, except for some continual cramping that I passed off as "false labor."

Monday evening I cooked up some steaks for RJ and I and prepared the guest room b/c my good friend Shelley, her brand new baby boy Miles, and her mom were going to be stopping over to spend the night on their way up to SLO. Before dinner RJ kept complaining of a stomach ache and he decided to skip the meal. An hour later I found him running to the restroom. The poor guy got hit with a nasty 24 hour bug and it was really bad.

I sent RJ to bed and fiddled around the house until about 10pm. the cramping continuing but acting really mild and continuous unlike contractions. I heard Shelley come in and head to the guest room around 11pm. At 12:00 midnight I got "the show" and half an hour later my first contraction - in the middle of my back.

Tuesday, April 14 -

RJ had finally setting down into a deep sleep but the contractions in my back wouldn't let me lay down or sit without major pain. By 2am I knew I was definitely in real labor. I gave up trying to get comfortable in bed, left RJ sleeping, and started pacing the living room while reading up on back labor. At 4am I called my mom worried that my labor coach was going to be too ill to take care of me. Mom got there at 6:30, just as the contractions going beyond uncomfortable and into painful. A few minutes later Shelley woke up and got thrown into the action.

There's lots more but my family is clamoring for pics so I'll have to pick up the rest of the birth story in a bit....

Quick Update

Monday, April 13, 2009

I went to the doctor's office today and apparently our son really likes it in the womb. I am only 1 cm dilated and not at all effaced. This might have caused me tears but I have hope in the fact that we have an end date. If he doesn't come naturally this week they will start the induction process Sunday night and I should deliver on Monday.

It is nice to know I'll meet the boy face-to-face within a week. However, we would much prefer that he come naturally. We appreciate your prayers that the labor process start naturally and our little guy comes out safe and healthy.

Happy Easter & Due Date

Black is a bit sliming, but you can see our boy is getting big. He should be ready to come out today but I think he really likes it in there. I've really enjoyed my pregnancy - until about 3-4 days ago when time started standing still. Now I just want to meet my son! And tie my own shoes, shave my legs, drink a beer, eat sushi, wear my jeans, go in a hot tub, eat raw cookie dough, have a glass of wine with dinner, sleep on my back or tummy, and walk without looking like a penguin!

Our friends Blair and Michelle had an 80s party the other night. Thankfully you can still pull off an 80s look with a basketball tummy.

RJ and I got to see our son on Monday. The doc was a tiny worried b/c my external measurements were small so we went in for an ultrasound. He is perfect and measuring exacting 40 weeks today! They're also estimating him to be a normal size - between 7 and 8 pounds (He better come out soon b/c I don't want to squeeze out a 9 pounder!).  You can tell by my weepy eyes and RJ's big grin that we were pretty excited baby Hosking checked out okay. Praise the Lord! The ultrasound technician also confirmed that he most definitely is a boy and we got to see most of his inside parts. His heart was pumping strong, lungs were taking practice breaths, liver looked good, etc.  Now we just wait....
